Sick

Fri Aug 10, 2007, 10:43 PM
Today has topped my list for the days that I certainly could do without.

The status so far: throwing up twice and just generally being miserable. The diagnosis appears to be the flu. :( But, if any good has come out of this, it would be that it's got me thinking critically/philosophically again. My thoughts have been focused on viruses. Trying to determine whether or not this seemingly unintelligent, submicroscopic particle, which infects its host and replicates itself, is in fact intelligent. Of course this opens up a whole new set of elementary questions that I could branch off onto, but for the sake of space constraints as well as my pounding headache, I think being brief is the best option.

I believe you could make a case that viruses are intelligent in a sense that they have arguably figured out the best way to transfer themselves from organism to organism: mediums such as reproduction in living creatures, air, or consumables. It definitely seems like the rational route to go about spreading yourself. Attack the only means for which your host’s species can survive: reproduction. The other end of the spectrum, stating that viruses are nothing but small capsules with one sole purpose: infecting creature’s cells in order to survive by duplicating itself. You could argue that the way that they transfer themselves, whether it is through reproduction of their host, air, or what have you, is simply just a medium through which they get carried; nothing more. No grounds to believe that the way they spread has other meaning. There would also be no history of evolutionary steps for the way in which they choose and cross a medium. Both arguments appear sound but I personally prefer the former. Anyways, that’s enough sick man mumbo jumbo.

Considering that I haven't been sick in well over a year, I guess it was inevitable that it would catch up with me. Well played, viruses, well played. :surrender:
